4/12/17 – Johnny DeAngelis & the JD Motorsports team opened up their 2017 campaign this past Sunday at the 3rd Annual Icebreaker 100 which was held at the Dells Raceway Park, just outside Wisconsin Dells.
29 Super Late Models were on hand for the Sunday afternoon event, which drew a capacity crowd for the 3rd year in a row. Qualifying was up first, Johnny was last car out by virtue of being the first car to pre-enter the event. After laying down a quick lap in the earlier practice session, the team was confident they could repeat in qualifying. After making a few changes to the car, Johnny’s turn to qualify was up. He was able to only turn a lap time of 13.706 seconds which was good enough for 18th of the 28 cars that qualified.
With the top 16 cars in qualifying locked in to the Icebreaker 100 main event, Johnny would need to take part in one of the events 15 lap qualifier races. The #7 D&H Demolition entry started 2nd and got stuck on the high side at the start which let 2 car get past. Once Johnny was able to get in line, the race was mostly single file for the duration of the 15 laps which resulted in the Kick Ass Work Wipes / DeAngelis Construction entry coming home in 4th place.
The Icebreaker 100 lap main event was next on the day, Johnny was set to pilot the Undercover Lights / Industrial Recyclers for outside row #9. As the field was coming to take the green flag, another competitors car had issues arise which resulted in him stopping on the track, leaving the rest of the field to scramble to miss the stalled car. Johnny was stopped in time, but competitors behind him had nowhere to go, resulting in the Kraussel Tool and Mfg. #7 being shoved into the stalled car & collecting 4-5 more cars. The event was red flagged so the track could be cleared of crashed cars & the fluids that were dropped on the racing surface. Johnny was able to limp the JD Motorsports / TD Graphics #7 back to the pits, where the crew was waiting to make repairs. After may repairs were made, Johnny was able to rejoin the field before they went back to green flag action. With the car not 100% to his liking, Johnny was able to complete the 100 lap event on the lead lap & was able to race the Hepfner Racing Products / Crystal Lake Landscaping #7 up to a solid 14th place finish to open up the 2017 season.
Next up on the schedule for Johnny & the JD Motorsports team will be the ARCA Midwest Tour Race at Madison International Raceway on Sunday May 7th for the Joe Shear Classic 200.
JD Motorsports would like to thank the following partners who make this all possible: DeAngelis Construction, D&H Demolition, Industrial Recyclers, Kraussel Tool and Mfg., Undercover Lights, Kick Ass Work Wipes, TD Graphics, Hepfner Racing Products, & Crystal Lake Landscaping.
